I've made new tool to help track & communicate crop GE regulatory change
Freely provide high-res versions and news on gene editing regulatory change for crops.
Like the map above? It’s yours to use. I’ve made a website to freely provide high-res versions and news on gene editing regulatory change for crops. Why? Read below (and a small request).
Crop gene editing regulations, particularly for precision breeding, are changing rapidly across the world. It’s hard to keep up - and even harder when every other presentation uses out of date maps.
This didn’t use to be a problem, as the Genetic Literacy website GE tracker1 provided a great resource, but sadly hasn’t been updated since 2024. A lot has changed in that time.
The alternative is to use publication figures, but the long review times and static nature of these resources mean they swiftly go out of date.
So Godfrey M. Ngure, Ph.D. and I made a solution 👉 https://cropgeregulations.com/
🗺️ Freely available, regularly updated high resolution maps.
✍️ Download link to editable Illustrator file versions.
🧬 A quick table reference of gene edited crop regulatory status.
📰 Updates on gene editing regulatory changes, available as RSS feed straight to your Outlook / RSS reader.
⚡ The site is made to be as lightweight and straight to the point as possible (and tracker free) - easy to check from a conference on slow internet.
Now the request. Well, two actually:
-
Please can you send or tag me in any crop GE regulatory changes you see online. My roles with Norwich Institute for Sustainable Development, John Innes Centre and Godfrey’s position in ISAAA AfriCenter mean we catch a lot, but it’s easy to miss something.
-
This website will be a state of ongoing development. I’d greatly appreciate feedback or advice of changes you feel might be helpful.
Lots of people have helped inform the information on the current website. Big thanks to Christopher Darby, Andrew Dominy, Dr Penny Hundleby CSci, FRSB, Nancy Podevin, Inez Slamet-Loedin and Billy Ratemo for updates on regulatory changes to help inform this site.
Incidentally, some readers might not support gene editing in crops. This site is intended to be neutral in sharing updates to support academic or business debate. Regardless of your position, I hope the site means you can draw on the most up to date information to make your arguments.
